As the first multimedia campaign to promote organ donation rolls out across the UK today, new research reveals the gap between what we would take and what we are prepared to give. While 96% of us would accept an organ if we needed one, only 27% of us have the joined the NHS Organ Donor Register (ODR). Many of us (45%) have the best intentions to sign up to the ODR and commit to donate our organs for transplantation after our death, but just haven't got round to it.

Leaders of the major faith groups have put their support behind the Wall of Life, an interactive campaign launched today by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). The campaign - at http://www.walloflife.org.uk - aims to promote awareness of and support for organ donation to boost the number of people joining the NHS Organ Donor Register (ODR).

A life-saving program that speeds up the matching of donated organs to would-be transplant patients has been named a finalist in the international Computerworld Honours Program 2009. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) commissioned global services company, Sapient, to design an electronic system to manage the process for matching and allocating organs donated for transplant across the UK.

Everyone aged between 40 and 74 years in England will receive free NHS health checks to help prevent conditions such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. The health checks are part of a Government drive to ensure that people from this age group are given information about their health in order to make important lifestyle changes and to reduce their risk of developing the above conditions.
